Top Games List: 10 Cozy Games Like Winter Burrow

After playing Skyrim for many hours and achieving only one thing, it’s always nice to find cozier games that I can dip in and out of. We all need a break now and again. Winter Burrow fills that seasonal need for a bit of down time, a bit of coziness and a bit of adventure.

Compared to my current go-to of Skyrim, Winter Burrow draws a lot of comparisons, just on a much smaller, mouse-sized scale. There’s crafting, levelling up equipment, combat, survival and adventure. Just in much more manageable, berry-biting-sized pieces.

What first attracted me to Winter Burrow was the art style and the setting. The art style in Winter Burrow reminded me, straightaway, of story books I would read and be read when I was growing up. Giving me heartwarming flashbacks to being read Rupert Bear Annuals by my grandmother.

It feels familiar, it feels like home.

I had the feeling of watching Wind in the Willows, hearing the Tale of the City Mouse and the Country Mouse; and here I am about to head off on my own adventure in those familiar worlds.

What Is Winter Burrow About?

The idea of rebuilding your childhood home, your sanctuary, living in the base of a big tree stump, with lots of history and memories, just feels right. However, the reason as to why you are embarking on this adventure, comes from a very sad beginning – no spoilers.

The familiar, reminiscent visuals, combined with a series of setbacks, makes you want to succeed and protect our plucky mouse main character.

Winter Burrow eases you into the controls and mechanics. Directing you to what needs repairing in your tree stump house as a welcome starting point.

Crafting in Winter Burrow

I loved the three main ways of crafting in Winter Burrow. There is woodworking, for all your D.I.Y needs. Knitting, which is just adorable and also very practical. And cooking, which will soon have you crafting nourishing meals to keep you warm on your journey. On the surface the crafting can seem quite basic, but as recipes and items get more complex, there is actually a lot of planning and strategy that goes into the crafting process.

Everything you need to begin crafting is readily available on your woodland doorstep in Middle Wood. But as you venture out to gather, that is when you start to feel the icy grasp of winter. As soon as you start to brave the elements, you start to feel the cold.

Probably because you arrived home in your city clothes, and you are now a country mouse.

Facing a frozen wilderness

Soon enough, after gathering a few basic supplies, you’ll head back inside to the warm embrace of your fireplace. After these first few steps into the great outdoors and adventuring, you’ll start to feel hungry. Well, no better time to fire up the stove and to put those cooking skills to practice.

Tucking into mushrooms, biscuits and a fine selection of pies, all home made of course, will soon have you back on track.

After warming up and filling your tiny mouse belly, you’ll want to venture out again. Buuuut……. night time comes, you can go out, however, it will be even colder. So why not just snuggle up in your cozy, hand crafted, bed and wait until morning, to be good to go again.

You wake up, it’s snowy, sometimes a little too snowy. The weather changes day to day and can occasionally create whiteouts. Itโ€™s the little touches like this that affect gameplay, and I love that. The time of day, the weather conditions, your level of hunger, and the size of your backpack: all of these well-thought-out elements give Winter Burrow great pacing.

Soon enough you will find yourself being braver and venturing further and further. Even further once you (or myself) discover the run button after four hours of playing. I don’t know how I didn’t know I could run, as the game quite literally showed me in the controls. I think I was just enjoying a nice walk in the woods in winter.

Braving the wildlife

Soon you will find Aunty and a whole host of delightful characters. Each with their own story to tell and for you to be a part of. I fell in love with the story and genuinely felt for each new and old friend along the way. Each of the characters you encounter will give you tasks to do, which might feel repetitive, but actually helps unlock new areas of the map and keeps the pacing of the game under control.

You will gradually level up your equipment, unlocking new areas to explore and tougher creepy crawlies…..SPIDERS! Spiders – yes? Spiders – no? Your choice. My wife turned spiders off in the settings so she didn’t get jump-scared. Instead you get hardier ants.

As you progress and level up, you really feel a sense of achievement. Being able to go further, stay out longer, build fires, create recipes, craft more and truly feel at home in Winter Burrow.

The game doesn’t spoon feed you all the next queues for quests, but allows you to discover for yourself. I liked this, as it adds to the sense of adventure and exploration. I would, however, advise on crafting all equipment as you progress, which I didn’t do until completing the story. Also I never actually crafted all the furniture. But each to their own.

You can spend a nice amount of time gathering, crafting and creating the coziest of tree stump homes. Or like me you can adventure to your hearts content.

Is Winter Burrow Worth It?

I would definitely go back and give Winter Burrow a replay and hope that future updates and content might be added. It’s nice to finish a story in a game, as I am terrible for starting and stopping games. But, Winter Burrow had me hooked and was a nice length, a great pace and a thoroughly lovely game.

If you want a tiny adventure with a big heart and the most adorable, illustrative visuals, Winter Burrow is one game not to miss out on.
