Have you ever wondered what it would be like to romance your dirty laundry? Stay with me here. If you think that’s weird, this post is about to get a whole lot weirder as we explore a few games like Date Everything!

I love a good romance game. Especially in life sims. But rarely do I ever play a game that is solely about relationships. So earlier this month I decided it was time. I could’ve played something wholesome like Later Daters or another life sim with dating elements, but Date Everything was on offer (still is at the time of writing this) and I was craving a good laugh.
Iโll be honest, when I first saw Date Everything I rolled my eyes a bit. Datingโฆ household objects? I mean, it looked completely ridiculous. But I wanted a palette cleanser before I jumped feet first into Starsand Island. I just wasnโt ready to commit to another 100-hour relationship with a cozy game. I wanted something lighter. A game that didn’t require me to start a new spreadsheet to track everything.
And if I’m being totally honest, I kinda geeked out when I saw a couple of characters were voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch.
Johnny Yong Bosch is the voice actor known best known for roles in anime and games (including Nero in Devil May Cry and Ichigo in Bleach, among many others), so even if the concept sounds daft, the performance side of the game is thoroughly professional. Bare that in mind as I delve into my review of this game a bit further.

What Is Date Everything About?
You just started working for the tech company Valdivian, but immediately get replaced by AI! Through some legal loophole, you donโt get fired outright though. So youโre basically just stuck in limbo. Still technically employed but fully aware corporate is hunting for the right clause to boot you out. Which sucks really.
Then a mysterious message appears in your inbox and they somehow have your address! Before you know it a package lands on your doorstep. Inside are magical sunglasses called the Dateviators. You put them on and suddenly your whole house comes to life. Your door wants to protect you. Your bath is a diva. And your dirty laundry wants to break up with the hamper. And there are so many puns it kinda hurts.
Date Everything is a sandbox dating sim so silly I didn’t think I would like it at all. But as I walked round my house, I discovered over 100 fully voiced characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with.
Some characters are literal objects. Some are more like concepts, one is even a glitch. Each one has their own quirks, and backstory. Itโs packed with puns, multiple endings, and a very self-aware sense of humour. Itโs absolutely a parody, but underneath the chaos it still follows that familiar cozy loop of chatting, choosing dialogue, and seeing where the relationship goes.

A parody-ish take on dating sims
Date Everything can be interpreted as parody-adjacent take on dating sims and visual novels rather than a traditional, serious example of the genre.
But itโs not straight-up satire of a specific single game like Hatoful Boyfriend did (where you literally date pigeons to mock dating sims).
Itโs mostly mocking the dating sim genre at large, the conventions around branching dialogue, romanceable characters, and the sometimes weird setups those games will justify just to put you in a flirtatious scenario. But it does so in its own strange way rather than directly spoofing one single title.
Thereโs something oddly comforting about a game that knows itโs ridiculous.

Character collecting
I don’t play many creature-collection games so the best comparison I have is Animal Crossing. It sounds wild to compare them, I know. One lets you date a toilet. The other lets you gift a sweater to a duck. But I can explain.
In Date Everything, you โcollectโ characters by discovering which objects in your house transform when you use the Dateviators. Part of the fun is simply finding them all. You potter around thinking, will this turn into someone? Sometimes yes. Other times the damn sink appears when you just wanted to have a chat with the blanket. I hate that sink (aka Sinclaire).
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, youโre also building up a roster of personalities over time. Villagers move in, you get to know them, you collect reactions and their photos, and your island gradually feels fuller because of who lives there. But itโs not about romance, it’s about friendships and discovering different character types.
I’d never really considered Animal Crossing a character-collector game until now!

Not quite as innocent as it looks
I do need to flag that Date Everything isnโt as wholesome as it appears. The art style is bright and playful, but some of the humour leans into adult territory. There are sexual references, and a lot of flirty dialogue. Itโs definitely written for adults.
There are also a handful of darker undertones woven into the character stories. Some character routes explore mental health issues, addiction, violence and other themes.
If youโre comfortable with cheeky humour and the occasional suggestive joke, youโll likely be fine. If you prefer your cozy games completely wholesome and child-friendly, this might catch you off guard. Itโs playful, but it knows exactly what itโs doing.
When you meet the first darker themed character you do get a prompt from Skylar asking if you wish to skip these conversations moving forward. Skipping them doesn’t impact your game, but I wanted to experience it fully so I could report back to you. I recommend toggling this setting on if you are sensitive to the themes it mentions. It also speeds the game along a bit.

Is Date Everything Worth It?
For the right person, yes. For every cozy gamer, definitely not.
Date Everything is unhinged! I laughed, I cringed, and I raced through some dialogue because it made me uncomfortable. Some of the story-lines I found dragged on a bit quite frankly.
It’s not a wholesome game. But I play these games so you can decide if it’s worth your time.
To be totally honest I enjoyed it, and I already want to jump back on to complete a different ending. Every dateable has 3 possible relationship outcomes: love, friendship, or hate, and as I worked toward one of those endings I found myself changing my mind after getting to know them. I’d switch from being kind to being mean and vice versa.
Did it feel good? Absolutely not! Naturally I tend to lean into making friends, so it’s no surprise that most of my dateables ended up being friend-zoned. With the exception of Clarence Couture aka Dirk of course, he’s my bae.
My favourite characters of the game were Mateo Manta (blanket), River (water), and Winnifred (water heater).
You can only interact with up to 5 different characters per day, so individual stories tend to move fairly quickly once you focus on one person at a time. But if you did want to complete everything the game has to offer, meeting and finishing relationships with all of the characters can take around 50 hours, and even longer if youโre aiming for all of the secret interactions and multiple endings. So it’s definitely worth its price tag.
