How To Intentionally End Your Year With Cozy Rituals
I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions anymore. By the time Christmas is over I’m so knackered I’m lucky if I’ve got the energy to wake up, never mind stick to a diet or go over my finances! This year I’m doing things differently… I’m creating cozy rituals.

This post kicks off a new monthly series on my blog called “Why am I like this?” It’s a pause from game talk to dig into the quirks and questions that crop up in all our lives. Each month, I’ll pick a topic that makes me think, why do I actually do this? You know, the stuff we all feel but don’t always talk about.
Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about doing something different to New Year’s resolutions. I want fewer expectations for the year ahead. Less striving for things I don’t even need. More money in the bank. And absopositively… less body shaming.
I’m not starting a brand new year by being horrible to myself. Nope. Nu-uh. Not happening.
I know this is a little different from my usual cozy gaming content, but after nearly four whole years of blogging, I fancy adding a teeny tiny bit more of my own cozy lifestyle into the mix.
Because to me, cozy gaming has always been more than just the games. It’s a mindset. A way of living, even. I don’t play a game in the hope it’s going to solve all my problems. My mind, body and surroundings have to feel just right. That’s why I created a cozy gaming space.
I love my home comforts.
For Christmas I even asked my husband to buy me soft things. He didn’t disappoint! I just want to be swaddled in fluffy throws, a tea within arms reach, and a game like Winter Burrows to play for a few hours.
So when I felt this proper wave of ugh at the idea of making yet another goals list for the new year, I thought… I really can’t be bothered with any of it this year.
Rather than jump feet first into the new year, I’ve decided to round it out with some self-care by creating cozy rituals that i hope to repeat every year from now on. Well, a few of them atleast. I’m not putting any pressure on myself.
I’ve pulled together some ideas I love that are all about grounding and gratitude.
You can’t pour from an empty cup right?
So let’s do this together! And you never know, it might just help us kick start the new year with a fresh outlook and a positive affection for the past year.
The kind of cozy money can’t buy
Cozy rituals aren’t about buying more stuff. They’re about intention. About choosing little things that actually mean something to you, not just ticking a box off your to-do list.
A real ritual, to me, is something that fills you up from the inside. You do it because you want to. Because you know it’ll stir something in you. That’s very different from routines that feel like duty, or so-called self-care.
Quite frankly, some of the coziest moments cost nothing extra at all. Enjoying a game you purchased months ago but forgot about. Lighting that candle you were keeping just for aesthetics. Sitting still for a minute and letting your shoulders drop while you watch the rain pour outside. That’s the kind of cozy I’m after. The kind that feels meaningful, not expensive.
Make rituals part of the whole year
I love the idea that cozy rituals aren’t just for the end of December too. They can live with you all year round. Little traditions you build for yourself. Some might be seasonal. Some might pop up once a year. Others could be small and steady, like a gentle rhythm running through your weeks.
When you start thinking of these moments as rituals, they suddenly feel more special. More protected. Like they actually deserve your time.
For me, that’s the magic. There’s a cadence to it. Something to look forward to. Not just another thing in the diary, but a cozy moment in time that says, this matters to me.

7 Game-Changing Cozy Rituals To Add To Your Year
1. The 7-Minute Mood Reset
This has quietly become my go-to on the days when I’m overwhelmed and overstimulated. The kind of days where I’m constantly catastrophizing, and even listening to some music can’t quite cut through the noise in my head.
Instead of pushing on or pretending I’m fine, I give myself 7 minutes to pause. No fixing or judgements. Just breathing, noticing, and letting my body soften bit by bit.
Deep Breathing: Breathe in for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds and release for 5 seconds. Repeat a further 3 times.
Check-in: While breathing normally imagine a warm sensation as it travels from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Linger on each body part for 15 seconds or more. While you linger listen to your body, what is it telling you?
Are you tense? Try releasing each muscle as you go.
Imagine your body completely relaxing as if you are experiencing a full-body massage.
Picture this: Now you are fully relaxed, picture yourself in a safe environment. That might be the room you are in, a hammock on a beach, a coffee shop. Anywhere you feel safe in that moment. Using each of your senses fully embrace your imaginary surroundings.
What can you see, smell, taste, touch and hear?
I think that’s why it’s stuck with me. It doesn’t demand the “right” setting or a chunk of time I don’t have. I can do it on the sofa, in bed, even on the bus on the way to work. It meets me exactly where I am.
And on the days when my thoughts feel messy, those 7 minutes are enough to help me feel a little more like myself again.
2. The Daily Intention Technique
You might be surprised to hear this, but intentions and goals aren’t the same thing. Goals chase an outcome. Intentions honour the season you’re in. They meet you where you are, instead of pushing you towards perfection.
So instead of piling on goals the moment you wake up, what if you chose just one small intention for the day? A feeling. A kindness. Something you’d like to carry with you.
That’s what turns it into a ritual, not a chore.
I like to set mine while I’m making my morning tea or coffee. It’s my moment to be present before the day envelopes me. I’m not trying to control everything ahead. I’m simply choosing how I want to meet it.
And once you notice how much calmer that makes you feel, it stops being something you should do. It becomes something you want to do. Same action. TOTALLY different energy.
If you fancy trying it, here are a few cozy intentions you can borrow. But I hope you find your own soon:
Today, I’ll take gentle care of my… mind, body, and heart.
Today, I’ll put real time into the people I love.
In this season, what matters most to me is… peace / growth / rest .
Today, I’ll be open to something new.
My word for this year is… balance / lean in / renewal.
I make a conscious effort to recognize and meet my physical, emotional, and mental needs
I place trust in my intuition and my emotions
I accept my full range of emotions without judgement
I give myself permission to slow down and rest when I need it.
I treat myself with the same kindness and patience I offer to others.
3. The Inner Voice Reframe

After years of beating myself up over one bad comment, I’ve finally found a way to silence my inner critic: Affirmations. They’re not about pretending everything is perfect or forcing myself to feel confident overnight. They’re about softening the noise.
Mine usually start with “I am” because it helps me anchor back into who I am, not what I’ve done wrong or what someone else thinks. It brings me into the present and reminds me that I’m allowed to exist without constantly proving myself.
I say them slowly. Sometimes out loud, sometimes just in my head. Some days they land, some days they don’t. And that’s okay. The point is showing up and choosing kindness over criticism, again and again.
Please take what you need.
- I am safe to slow down today. The world won’t fall apart if I take things one step at a time.
- I listen to my body. Even when I’m unsure, I’m learning to listen instead of ignoring how I feel.
- I don’t need to earn rest to deserve it. Pausing is part of living, not a reward at the end.
- Small moments still count. A cup of tea or a deep breath can change the tone of my whole day.
- I am allowed to take up space just as I am. I don’t need to be louder, better, or different to belong.
- I’m doing the best I can with what I have today. And that is enough for now.
- It’s okay to move gently through life. Not everything needs fixing or figuring out all at once.
- I can let today be simple. Simple doesn’t mean empty. It means calm.
- I’m learning to be kinder to myself. Each time I soften instead of criticize, something inside me relaxes.
- I trust that things can unfold in their own time. I don’t have to push. I can meet the day where it is.
4. The One-Good-Thing Reset
I started gratitude journaling 11 years ago, and it slowly changed the way I look at my life. Now, it’s like a lens I see the world through. But honestly, you don’t need to keep a journal for over a decade to feel the difference.
Once a day, I pause and name one small thing that made me feel even a tiny bit lighter. Then I let myself really feel it for a moment, just sit with it.
That’s it.
No pressure to write pages. No guilt if I miss a day. The magic is in the noticing. Training your mind to look for what’s already good, even when life is feeling overwhelming.
And when you turn that pause into a ritual, maybe at bedtime or while your kettle’s boiling, it becomes this an anchor in the day. A way of saying, this mattered. Which, quite frankly, it did!
5. The Word of the Year
I started a new ritual last year, and it’s quickly become one of my favourites. Instead of setting a long list of goals, I’m choosing a single word to carry with me through the year ahead.
For 2026, my word is Anchored.
I want to feel steady, even when life gets busy. Rooted in what matters. Less swept along by every new trend. I don’t want to drift far from who I am.
That’s the beauty of a word of the year. It’s not about rules. It’s about direction. It gives you something gentle to come back to when you’re making choices, feeling unsure, or just need a reminder of what you’re growing towards.
I turn this into a ritual by meeting my word regularly. I write it at the front of my journal. I keep it on a note by my desk. Sometimes I whisper to myself before I pull a tarot card. I’ll check in with it at the start of each month and ask, what can I do to feel a little more anchored today?
If you fancy trying it, don’t overthink it. Let a word find you. One that feels like something you need right now. Then let it walk with you into the year ahead.

6. The Monthly Reset Walk

I can’t express how much this lifts my mood. I fell out of practice with it recently but I’m making a concerted effort to bring it back into focus for the new year.
You can do this on your own, or with a loved one, a friend, or even a walking club. Going for a walk feels non-negotiable if you stare at a screen all day like I do. Pick a time and a place and try to stick to it. Somewhere green if you can. Woods, fields, a coastal path. Not just a lap around the city.
Leave your phone in your pocket. Or your bag. Let your thoughts drift without needing to capture or document anything. Notice the light, the air, the rhythm of your steps. By the time you get home, something usually feels a little quieter inside.
7. The Snack Prep
This helped me break free from overeating. Whenever I’m playing a game, I tend to reach for snacks I can eat mindlessly. Before I know it, a whole packet’s gone.
Now, I prep my favourite healthier nibbles and pop them into stackable tubs that live in the fridge or cupboard. Nothing fancy. Just easy to grab.
- Fruit – strawbs, grapes, pomegranate rubies
- Dry Nibbles – Graze selection packs are my favorite
- Oatcakes and peanut butter for dipping
It sounds small, but it makes a real difference. When I sit down for a gaming session, I’m far less likely to reach for crisps or a chocolate bar. The better option is already there, waiting for me.
Here are the tubs I use and love.
What This Looks Like for You
I recommend starting with one you enjoy the most. Pay attention to how they feel rather than how well you think you’re doing them. This isn’t about getting it right. It’s about finding what fits your life.
What surprised me most was how easy it was to begin. Things I used to avoid, like exercise or taking proper breaks, felt less of a chore once I reframed them as a deliberate choice rather than something I had to rush through.
From what I’ve seen, consistency matters far more than intensity.
And remember this. The best cozy rituals are the ones you actually want to repeat. Start where you are and be patient.
