I love dressing up. Who doesn’t like looking good and feeling great?
I’ve been into fashion since I got my first Barbie way back in the late 80s. Showing my age a little but whatever. I loved clothes so much that i studied fashion in college, yep, I have a fashion diploma. Not that I’ve ever done anything with it. Largely thanks to being diagnosed with Endometriosis and Adenomyosis which left me in crippling pain.
And weirdly, missing out on making the most of my education is something one of the developers of Dressmaker and I have in common.
Sabrina Becker’s dreams of studying costume design abroad were thwarted by her diagnosis ofย hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndromeย (a connective tissue disorder). Her partner, Jonathan Hau-Yoon made her dream into a game instead.
We all need a Jonathan in our lives.
With her guidance and expertise, Dressmaker has now become a roaring success, with an overwhelmingly positive review on Steam just days after its release. And you can watch my first impressions of Dressmaker on YouTube.
If you’re looking for even more games like Dressmaker I’ve included them at the bottom of this game review.

What is Dressmaker About?
Become a dressmaker! Choose fabric, cut out patterns, and sew them all together to satisfy (or sabotage!) townsfolk in this cozy crafting game inspired by real dressmaking. โ Steam
Dressmaker is a cozy fashion game about making dresses. Finally! It was about time we got a good fashion game.
Inspired by real-world dressmaking (but not requiring any prior knowledge) Dressmaker gives you creative control over every part of making dresses, from simple summer dresses to extravagant royal gowns. A variety of townsfolk commission you to make unique dresses according to their own tastes and to match events on their social calendar.
Meet a whole town of people hoping to fill their wardrobes with custom-made dresses tailored specially to important events and their individual tastes. Create dresses to impress them, or display your own designs in your shop window and sell pre-made dresses off of the rack.

Fabric, Pattern Cutting & Sewing
While the game doesn’t specify what era the story is set in, it has a Regency or Victorian England aesthetic. So all the designs feel old-timey. There is a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. And I found it easy to search by tag to find what i needed without going through the whole rack one by one.
Every dress starts by designing in your sketchbook. I loved being able to use the colored pencils to plan out exactly how I wanted my dress to look. I was always useless at drawing figures so I’m very happy to not have to do that for each design.
Pattern cutting is much easier in game than IRL. There’s ZERO maths involved. But placing your pieces in an orderly fashion still saves you money on wasted fabric, which I found out the hard way.
You can use the sewing machine manually, or switch Sew Assist on in the settings and sewing gets much faster. I did find out though that you can’t just unpick a few stitches if you make a mistake. Instead if you make a mistake you have to reset and start over, so go slowly if you’re a perfectionist.

The Manniquin
Most dress-up games focus on putting clothes on a doll-like, unrealistic figure. Dressmaker has an adjustable dressmakers’ dummy. These allow you to get super specific about your measurements and tailor each dress to your client.
I was super excited to see curvier options.

Your Clients
The writing for each client is chef’s kiss ๐ค Every one of them has a distinct personality, and I loved seeing how their stories (and their outfits) weave into each other.
The ladies in Twillford will ask you to commission a dress for various events. And as you level up you’ll unlock more patterns to use in your designs. You’ll design outfits for every event, from funerals to balls, weddings, pet shows, and more.
I know the focus, and the games popularity, are because of the fashion design elements but the story shouldn’t be overlooked.
Is Dressmaker Worth Playing?
I had a blast playing Dressmaker. When I was editing my gameplay video for it I had to cut out so much more giggling than you see. It was just so nice to be creative and make clothes I like in between clients. Not that I’m very good at it or anything. My dresses are more conservative compared to the elaborate ones I’ve seen others make.
I just need it to come to Switch 2 next.

Quilts & Cats of Calico
Quilts & Cats of Calico is available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS and Android
Quilts and Cats of Calico is a wholesome, award-winning complex puzzle game for 1 to 4 players. Meet adorable cats and sew the coziest quilts. โ Steam
The first game on this list is more textiles based than fashion. Quilts and Cats of Calico is the digital adaptation of the Calico board game, where you’re tasked with sewing a quilt from patterned fabric scraps. Combine colors and patterns with their pairs and you’ll score more points for the finished design, attract buttons, and draw in cats who each have their own taste in bedding. Just like Dressmaker, there’s a story campaign where cats have great power and influence over people’s lives. You can even create your own cat in the customizer.
Quilts & Cats of Calico is the closest in style to Dressmaker. From here on out I’ve had to get a little bit creative with the choices.

You play as Nikki, travelling across the fantasy land of Miraland and collecting an enormous wardrobe of outfits, from everyday looks to elaborate fantasy wear. Outfits aren’t just cosmetic, many of them carry magical abilities tied to how you explore, letting you float, glide, shrink, or purify your surroundings, so building the right look also unlocks new ways to move through the world. You craft new pieces from materials gathered during cozy side activities like fishing, bug catching, and animal grooming, then mix and match everything freely to build your own style.
Some outfits are earned through crafting with collected materials, while others are tied to the game’s gacha system, a random-chance method common in free-to-play games for unlocking cosmetic items, so it’s worth going in with that expectation

You start in an abandoned workshop and build it into a fashion business, taking customer orders and designing collections from fabrics like cotton and linen. Beyond the sewing, there’s a management layer too: hiring staff, organizing inventory, upgrading furniture, and tearing down walls to grow the shop’s capacity and appeal.
The developer, Zoady, has laid out an 8 to 12 month roadmap for additional content, including a clothing factory, seasonal collections, a second city, and deeper customer relationships. So there’s much more content to come.

And last on today’s list, a puzzle game… because I’ve run out of fashion and shopping games.
