Management Sims

Game bought at full price. Opinions are my own after 20+hours gameplay

I’m a big BIG fan of management games, especially supermarket ones.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, I was a till monkey. I’ve worked in retail nearly my whole life. Stacking shelves, checking out groceries and picking up dog food for customers.

You’d think I’d want nothing to do with these types of games after doing it for a living. But, unless you’ve worked in retail, you won’t understand how much you miss the people and the routine of it all when it stops.

I technically am still in retail at the time of writing this but I’m more on the other side of it now – e-commerce and marketing. So I’m desk bound… and definitely not complaining. I’m not.

Okay, I am. But that’s only because I’d rather be playing video games and reviewing them for you full-time.

Talking about reviews. If you’re looking for supermarket games you should definitely check out my post on games like InKonbini after this.

But first, here’s my review of Discounty.

What is Discounty About?

Discounty is a narrative-driven management sim that can be played in 20-25 hours on a single-player campaign. But you’re looking at 40+ hours if you’re like me, and just potter about reorganizing your shop.

Your aunt has invited you to manage the local store, ‘Discounty’, in the run-down harbour town of Blomkest. But beware, not everyone wants you to succeed.

Create an eye-catching, efficient store by rearranging shelves and products. Design inviting aisles for easy navigation and add decorations to encourage purchases!

Blomkestians don’t take well to newcomers. Gain manufacturers’ trust, make trade deals, and sell local specialty goods to boost Discounty profits. As profits soar, reinvest and grow! Expand your shop to stock more goods and advertise it around town.

Use every tool at your disposal to expand your business, but be mindful: rapid growth might ruffle a few feathers in this tight-knit community.

Shop Management

You start with a modest size shop which is in dire need of a makeover.

Actually, it’s empty when you first arrive.

There’s not much time to mull about admiring it though. The days are short and you need to order stock from Guy, fill your stock room, find and buy shelves and freezers to display your products and arrange them in aisles… from scratch!

The shop sells everything you expect from a supermarket – produce, dry goods, and frozen foods.

A full in-game day translates to about 15โ€“20 minutes. There’s no need to go to bed though. There are no penalties for passing out at midnight if you’re still rearranging your shop. You just wake up in your home.

You always rise at 6:00 am, giving you 3 hours to explore the town before the store opens at 9:00 am. Time speeds up from there until 5:00 pm. I found the controls on Switch 2 to be easy to navigate during this section.

I preferred to restock my store after the shop closed and the last customer had left because I had 7 hours left of the day and used my 3 hours in the morning to explore or complete trades.

Trade Deals

Some of the residents you meet can become trade partners, allowing you to add more items to your shop. These local vendors – Karl, Fisher, and Tammy – give you items that can’t be bought from your shops computer.

You must negotiate and complete specific challenges to stock new and exclusive items on your supermarket shelves.

Vendor upgrade trees are managed via individual Trade Deals rather than a single unified list. You can see this when you talk to them on the second tab (I know, I didn’t see it at first either).

You unlock and level up suppliers by completing tasks and spending perk points in their specific Perks Tree to unlock larger crate sizes, better prices, and new products.

Town Exploration

Outside of working hours you are free to explore the harbor, the bar, and various homes. Talk to the locals and uncover secrets, fulfill fetch quests, and deal with the town’s resistance to your massive, expanding business.

You explore the open world to build relationships, gather town gossip, and progress the narrative, which occasionally requires performing favors or quests for the locals.

One mechanic that is easy to miss, because I did, is interacting with highlighted items.

Inside the pub for example you will see a cup highlighted in yellow when you walk up to it, that’s more local gossip. And this town is full of it! From relationship drama to council budgets and even vandalism.

Basically your average town then.

Is Discounty Worth It?

Discounty captivated me to a point where time just slipped away.

I love the pushback from my character to my aunt. I questioned everything she did and loved that my character didn’t always agree with the outcome. This level of detail from the narration made it feel human. In a time where many games are falling into the AI slop trap, Discounty shows us that developers don’t need endless generated content when they have a clear vision.

And with the new ‘People or Profits?’ free DLC you can choose your own path.

The expansion kicks off right after the original ending, (you don’t need to download anything extra) dropping you in charge of the town’s fate.

You’ll experience a branching story with three all-new endings, restore the town of Blomkest, invent new gadgets, and decide whether you want to help the community or ruthlessly pursue profit.
