Top Games Lists: 10 Cozy Games Like inKONBINI

Put on your name badge and rubber soles because today we’re playing shop keeper. I recently played inKONBINI and now I feel nostalgic about all those years I spent stocking shelves. I could tell you some stories!

I don’t know what it is about shop management games but I get drawn into them time and time again. Maybe it’s because i find them relatable having worked in retail my whole life, or maybe I’m a glutton for punishment?

Either way, I love them!

Shop keeper games have elements of organizing, progression, and predictability. There’s a comforting satisfaction to neatly arranging items on a shelf, or as us retail workers call it ‘facing up’. I think cozy games especially have this way of romanticizing the mundane things we do in our jobs and day-to-day lives.

But inKONBINI feels a bit different from most shop management sims.

While thereโ€™s shelf stocking, scanning items, and keeping this little convenience store running smoothly, the real focus is on the people who walk through the door. Itโ€™s much slower paced than games like Supermarket Simulator.

What Is inKONBINI About?

inKONBINI: One Store. Many Stories is a cozy, narrative-driven slice-of-life game where you work the night shift in a Japanese convenience store.

You play as Makoto Hayakawa, a college student spending her summer nights behind the counter to help out her aunt, in a colorful world inspired by early 1990s Japan. Stock shelves, tidy displays, and prepare the store for the first daily customers. Between tasks, you explore the store and its surroundings, notice tiny details, and connect with regulars whose lives gently intertwine with yours.

Your interactions with customers and colleagues shape your relationships and reveal intimate stories of a close-knit neighborhood.

Meeting Customers and Learning Their Stories

One of my favorite things about inKONBINI is how intimate it feels. Customers are people too and you actually get to know them. Contrary to popular belief, us retail workers do actually like our customers… well, the nice ones anyway.

Sure you get the Karens and Kens of the world who think you are beneath them, but then you have the regulars. They are the soul of each business and the reason businesses continue to exist. I will always go above and beyond for them.

Retail workers are just people trying to feed their families, save up for college and dream of laying out in the sun rather than being stuck behind a till point. One person can literally make or break our entire day. Kindness is free people!

There’s a warmth to inKONBINI that a lot of business simulation or supermarket tycoon games skip over completely. Itโ€™s less about chasing profits and more about becoming part of a small community. It kinda reminds me of a cross between Coffee Talk and Season: A Letter to the Future in all honesty.

It’s an intricate tapestry of a small-town life with a Japanese concept ichi-go, ichi-e (one time, one meeting) at the very heart of this game.

Stocking Shelves and Running the Store

Of course, thereโ€™s still plenty of shopkeeping to enjoy too.

Youโ€™ll spend a large portion of your time stocking shelves, organizing products, scanning items at the till, and making sure everything looks neat before you start the day. It has those relaxing retail simulation elements that fans of cashier simulator or shelf stocking games will probably recognize instantly.

But I will never understand why people find that beep beep beep of the item scanner relaxing. It drives me up the wall. It’s up there with door bells constantly pinging every time a customer walks in or out. That’s just me though, having lived that retail life for decades. There are certain sounds, that when heard enough, will be less nostalgic and more irritating. I swear I hear bells in my sleep.

What makes this cozy game stand out from other retail simulator games is the pace.

Restocking shelves is calming rather than stressful. There are no prices to adjust, no debts to pay back, and no waiting for enough money to buy inventory (I’m assuming because I haven’t finished the game at the time of writing this). I will come back and update you once I have.

It captures that quiet rhythm of working in a small local store surprisingly well. Evenings feel slower, regulars drift in after opening, and the ambient sounds in the background make it feel like I’m actually there.

The Overall Vibe and Atmosphere

The konbini has this nostalgic, slightly melancholic vibe to it that feels like being in a movie. The game is set in 90’s Japan and everything from the posters, to the comics and the cassette player all add to the charm.

A lot of store clerk simulators or inventory management games focus heavily on progression systems, expansion, and making huge amounts of money, inKONBINI feels tiny in comparison. But it was the in-between moments, after I had stocked up and before I flipped the sign to open, that I got lost in the most.

There’s this peaceful ASMR-like soundscape filled with subtle everyday sounds and a calmness to simply existing in the store. Reading labels while stocking shelves, enjoying the sunrise at the end of a shift all added to the enjoyment. The music added a floaty feel to the game and even the customers moved as is walking through treacle.

Is inKONBINI Worth It?

Although I made a few jokes while playing my first-playthrough for YouTube I very much enjoyed the game and nearly 2 hours had passed in a blink of an eye. I want to savour the rest of the game.

It’s not a game to be rushed. There’s no way to fail and no time forcing you to open the store, just a quiet pop-up message reminding you to flip the sign every now and then. I was just intrigued by all the products I can’t buy here in the UK.

It kinda felt like a missed opportunity because I would have loved the recipes to some of those meals in the freezer! When you take a closer look at the items you can get a brief description but I just wanted more.

If you enjoy playing visual novels, meeting curious characters and adore slower paced cozy games then inKONBINI is worth a play. But if you’re expecting a job simulator with a lot of management then this probably isn’t right for you.

But what should you play next ? Let’s take a look at a few cozy games like inKONBINI next.
