The wait is over! Ages of Cataria announces Steam release date

Finally! It’s been 2 years and 9 months since Ages of Cataria launched on Kickstarter but the Indie village sim launches September 16th, with a roadmap promising new features post-launch.

After years of anticipation and speculation, Ages of Cataria is set to launch exclusively on Steam in Q3 2025. Developer Third Pie Studios shared the news in a Kickstarter update today, alongside a colourful new roadmap and a promise to self-publish the game moving forward.

What is Ages of Cataria?

Funded through Kickstarter in 2022, Ages of Cataria is a relaxing colony sim where you get to design and customize your village, and follow the generations of villagers who live there. . Your villagers age in real time, form relationships, and take part in dynamic story events that shape both their lives and the wider world. It’s a mix of town-building, life sim, and gentle RPG designed to grow slowly and organically.

Think of it as The Sims meets Banished, but cozier, and with far more majestic moustaches.

A New Chapter Begins – Early Access September 16th

In today’s Kickstarter post, Third Pie Studios announced that the long-awaited Early Access version will launch on September 16th via Steam. The game is being self-published, and the devs have been working “tirelessly” to bring the Early Access version into shape.

It wasn’t that long ago they were pitching to publishers but I can only assume they didn’t find what they were looking for, so rather than make their community wait any longer decided to self-publish. While it won’t include all the features initially outlined in the Kickstarter campaign, the team promises a solid foundation, and importantly… frequent updates.

“We are committed to frequently updating the game to achieve our vision,” the studio wrote. “With your continued support and feedback, we will achieve our vision of a story-generation town sim.”

Switch Version Coming in 2026

If you’re a Nintendo Switch player, you’ll need to hold on just a little longer. The team confirmed the Switch version has been delayed and is now slated for 2026. This aligns with their decision to self-publish, as they shift focus to getting the PC version stable and before expanding to other platforms.

Roadmap: What’s Coming Post-Early Access?

The new roadmap image shared today outlines several charming updates coming after the initial Early Access launch. Here’s a quick look:

  • Day of the Spirit prop drop
  • Winter Festival prop drop
  • Elven Ancestry joins the game
  • Valentwine’s Day prop drop
  • Traits update (likely related to villager personality or genetics)
  • Seasons update (hello, cosy autumn)
  • Animal Collection
  • Quests and Minigames
  • More villager outfits (yay!)
  • Trading and chatting systems
  • Ages of Cataria Switch Release

And finally, the note at the bottom hints at “…and so much more!” suggesting the roadmap will evolve over time with community feedback.

Weekly Streams & Transparency Promised

In the lead-up to launch and beyond, Third Pie Studios says they’ll be sharing regular development updates across all social platforms and hosting weekly Twitch streams. These will offer previews, patch notes, and space for the community to ask questions and give feedback.

They’re aiming for full transparency so players know exactly what they’re getting when they dive into Early Access in September.

If you’ve been craving a laid-back village sim where your choices matter, your people grow old, and every character has a story, Ages of Cataria could be your next obsession. September’s shaping up to be a busy month for cozy games, but this one’s been years in the making and it’s nearly time to set up camp, meet your villagers, and watch their lives unfold.

Keep an eye out for updates, dev streams, and (fingers crossed) a playable demo before launch.

And if you’re the planning type, maybe start thinking up a name for your new village (we can change our village names right?…) Personally, I’m torn between something cute like “Mossberry” or goofy, like “Moustache Hollow.” Thoughts?
