I love Christmas. I really do.
The whole build up to the big day, especially that week before, fills me with gratitude. How lucky am I to have a couple of days off to spend with family and friends to play a few cozy Christmas games together. Not everyone gets that, and I never forget it.
I still remember working Christmas Day back when I was in hospitality. The long shifts. Fake smiling till my cheeks hurt. Every minute of my evening was planned so I could squeeze the most out of those precious few hours off. I just needed to curl up with a relaxing winter game to switch my brain off.
Christmas can be exhausting. Especially if youโre more introverted like me.
I want to see everybody and nobody at the same time. I crave the laughter, but I also enjoy the quiet after everyone has gone home and I can melt into the sofa in my comfies.
Some of my favorite Christmas day memories are from the post-dinner crashes on the sofa. When there’s no more cooking to do, my husband has washed up for me, and we play Blanc together. It has become our Christmas day tradition. But we still get stuck in the same spot every year.
Those goats just start acting like they are in Goat Simulator! Getting stuck in corners, and plain ignoring us. Then we remember why we only play it once a year. What’s Christmas without a bit of chaos?
Today I want to share with you some of the best cozy Christmas games to play either on your own or with your family this week. I’ve curated a selection of Christmas games on Switch, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. So if it’s snow you want or you’re searching for games that make you feel all warm and fuzzy, I’ve got something for you.
What Makes a Game Feel Christmassy and Cozy?
I was watching Wallace and Gromit for the thousandth time at my annual family get together recently. It got me thinking how we all have our go-to TV series or film we watch each year but video games haven’t quite cornered the market yet.
Sure, there are games like Kingdom Hearts 2 which have a Christmas level (Christmas Town to be precise) but I wouldn’t pop it on just to play that section once a year.
My niece, who is only 17 months old, popped round the other day. Of course she brought my brother and sister in-law with her. First time I’ve seen them all year! Can time slow down please? While dinner was cooking I watched her pick up my Xbox controller and stand in front of my telly with the biggest grin on her face.
And in that moment, my heart melted. Core memory made, right?!
I started thinking about how lovely it would be for her to grow up with games that remind her of Christmas. Not just one snowy level, but whole games that feel warm and festive. Games that become part of her core memories, the same way films and songs do.
This is where indie developers, especially cozy game developers, can come into their own.
So I’m putting it to you developers. If you haven’t considered it yet, please create more Christmas-themed games. I really want games that have:
- A wintery, festive setting – Snow-dusted villages, glowing windows, Christmas markets and twinkling lights everywhere. If it looks like a Christmas card come to life, Iโm buying that.
- A story that leaves you smiling – Not too heavy. And definitely not too dark. Just a lovely tale with hope at its heart and a feel-good ending. The kind of games both kids and adults can enjoy.
- A game you can play together in couch-co-op – Playing side by side with your partner, your kids, or a full sofa of your extended family, is where memories are made. Laughing, messing up, trying again.
With this in mind let me share with you some cozy games with Christmas vibes that I feel hit one or two of these qualities.
