Coral Island has quietly become one of those games I keep drifting back to. I sit down planning a short session, restore a heritage site or two, and somehow an afternoon has disappeared.
Itโs a restorative farming game set on a tropical island, with plenty to do beyond planting seeds. You can build relationships, explore the ocean, and there are even merfolk. What I like most, though, is the mood. It feels unhurried, with space to play in whatever way feels right that day.
Iโve been spending a lot of time with Coral Island recently, and it got me thinking about other games that hit the same spot. So before I share a list of games like Coral Island, I wanted to talk a little about what makes this one work so well, and whether itโs actually worth playing.
Is Coral Island More Than A Typical Farm Sim?
Developed by Stairway Games, Coral Island is a self-described โreimagined farm sim game.โ
It has a lot of similarities to most farm sim games. It comes equipped with an island, land to farm, and plenty of tasks to keep you busy. Youโll still spend a lot of time growing plants, tending to animals, nurturing friendships, to name a few.
If youโre already a player of this genre of games, youโll immediately feel familiar with Coral Island.
However, it does have some unique qualities. A touch of conservation and environmentalism and some underwater exploration are what initially attracted my attention to Coral Island.

What is Coral Island All About?
It’s time to leave big-city life in Pokyo behind and start a new chapter of your life on Coral Island!
Be who you want and create the idyllic farm of your dreams, where youโll tend crops, nurture animals, and build a bond with the natural world around you. Help revitalize the nearby town and its surrounding coral reefs, and forge relationships with a vibrant community of more than 70 fellow people who call Coral Island home.
Speaking of relationships, you can befriend other characters, but you can also romance them. While thatโs not a new concept, itโs not necessarily the status quo in cozy games either. With 25 singles who are ready to mingle! Build relationships, sweep them off their feet, and find the oneโand when youโre ready, embark on a new chapter of your story together at the farm.
And, to be honest, there are quite a few incredibly good-looking characters to choose from. So if that strikes your fancy, you can hopefully find a partner to start a relationship with and even have some kids down the line if you choose.

Whatโs the aesthetic like?
Coral Island is such a gorgeous game to play! One of the main aspects that made me want to get the game was the underwater exploration and diving capability.
It has a 3D art style that is influenced by Disney animation.
The customization โ character and otherwise โ is one of the best parts of the game. Being able to change the layouts, take up interior decorating, and change my outfit on the regular is something I really enjoy doing.

What are the pros and cons of Coral Island?
The character diversity is pretty exceptional with lots of beautiful art and great stories. Thereโs also a lot of South Asia culture and folklore thrown into the mix which is fantastic.
There are Merfolk. That really should be enough of a pro right there. The mermaids are also beautifully designed with their royal family being based on Asian folklore.
As for cons, there are some bugs that have already been fixed or need fixing, as well as missing content that Iโm sure will be fixed with content updates. Some tasks, like mining, can become repetitive, but I find that to be the case in most games so Iโm not sure thatโs fully a con.

Is Coral Island worth it?
In my opinion, Iโm glad I bought and played Coral Island. It has everything I want in the typical farm sim game with unique additions that make it even more exciting.
However, (at the time of playing) there were some elements that felt unfinished and I feel quite a bit of discord about it perhaps leaving early access a little too early. However, if you can be patient with these bug fixes and finalized storyline, I think Coral Island is definitely worth it.
I personally just play it alongside other games, as it takes me a while to get through an entire game anyway. In my mind, itโs no different than what Disney is doing with Dreamlight Valley and Iโm nowhere near being caught up in that game despite playing it the most.
Coral Island is available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows/Steam. Get the unofficial guide right here.
